Code compliance set to be clarified

THE next few days should finally prove whether Deputy Charles Parkinsons alternative tax package is EU code-compliant. With the States set to discuss the Policy Councils proposed future taxation strategy next week, the Treasury and Resources deputy minister is continuing his campaign to generate support.
One aspect of his package allows any regulated financial services company to elect to be taxed in the 20% bracket, or alternatively pay a 7.5% payroll levy.
Some have questioned whether an elective rate of tax is code-compliant, whether it is permissible to have such an option under the EU code of conduct, said Deputy Parkinson.
Both Jersey and the Isle of Man are introducing elective rates of tax and the Isle of Man proposal is due to receive Royal Assent any day now.

'He's pretty beat up'

"I understand he's pretty beat up, though. I've seen pictures. He doesn't look too good. His face is gone and he's in about six or seven pieces. We'll just have to evaluate the situation and see what can be done."

The statue's restoration, if one is possible, will have to wait.

The mutilated fisherman is evidence against the man charged with felony theft, 37-year-old Herman Allen Hicks of Semmes, Ala. He will be extradited to Biloxi from Mobile County, where the dismembered fisherman's parts were found Tuesday in a creek and several miles away in overgrown weeds on a vacant lot.

Biloxians anxious to get back a piece of their heritage can thank a tipster, who spied the fisherman after news stories ran about his disappearance, and three Mobile County sheriff's officers: Detective Sgt.

Chandler Woodcock right man to lead Maine

Having served in the Maine State Police for 24 years, in the Aroostook County Sheriff's Department as a jail administrator and in the Maine Legislature for eight years, I've had more than my share of opportunities to observe people. Hopefully, in these 30-plus years, I have gained some expertise in recognizing good and trustworthy people. For most of my adult life, spent in police work, the ability to do this was critical for my own safety.

One of the things I've learned in those many years is that, while being very intelligent and having a keen mind is important for someone in political life, a little common sense wouldn't hurt either. How often have you known extremely intelligent individuals who didn't have a lick of common sense? What the voters in Maine deserve is a candidate who enjoys both traits.

REDMAN HONDA RACER FOR SALE

Offered for sale by multiple World Championship winner Jim Redman, this machine represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for serious collectors to acquire a genuine, ex-works, 1960s Grand Prix-winning Honda possessing impeccable provenance.

Also-rans in the late 1950s, Japanese manufacturers came to dominate Grand Prix racings 1960s Golden Age, none more so than Honda, whose jewel-like, small-capacity lightweights represented the pinnacle of motorcycle engineering in their day.

Built for and run by the works team, with only occasional loans to selected privateers, these hand-crafted masterpieces are extremely rare in private hands and only infrequently offered for sale. Only three complete four-cylinder machines of this particular type were made by Honda, and this one still has matching frame and engine numbers: RC164-1.

Help - Dangerous Legislation

GRIH Comment: The following is a copy of a letter sent to Sen. John McCain by one of his good friends and a fellow prisoner of war in North Vietnam during those awful days. His clarity of thought concerning the Akaka bill speaks for itself.

Dear John:

This is one last appeal; PLEASE vote NO on the Akaka Bill, S147. I know you find it difficult to go against the elected representatives of Hawaii, but let me explain.

Governor Lingle (with whom I agree on most issues), Hawaii's Congressional delegation and State Legislature are all in favor of the bill because it will guarantee MILLIONS IN CONTINUED FEDERAL FUNDING for over 150 programs specifically for Native Hawaiians (race based) most of which they are eligible for anyway based upon NEED, like anyone else. The legislators view the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) like they view the Hawaii Govt.

Mother of autistic toddler braces herself for new battle with ex-husband

LEEDS, UK: A mother is bracing herself for a fresh court battle with her former husband a year after he was jailed for torching her home as their autistic son slept upstairs.

Andrew Baker, 31, has been freed from prison early less than a year after being sentenced for the arson attack on the home of his then wife, Lyndsey Foy, their autistic son Luke, four, and Lyndsey's son from a previous relationship Joshua, 12.

Firefighters had to rescue Luke from his bedroom as flames and smoke took hold of the house in Belle Isle, Leeds, trapping the toddler inside.

Baker is now demanding access to the son, whose life he put in such grave danger.

Recalling the chilling moment she opened the solicitor's letter making the demands, Lyndsey told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "I thought it was some kind of sick joke.

Previewing the 2006-07 Season, Part 16: ABC's 'Big Day'

Please note: As a courtesy, please do not reproduce these comments to newsgroups, forums or other online places. Links only please.

With the official start of the 2006-07 season less than three months away, the drumbeats have begun by the networks to tout their new comedies and dramas. What should you keep your eye out for? What should you avoid at all costs? While it's still a little early for full reviews (some recasting and reshooting will be done on a good chunk of them), we thought we'd spend the next month or so previewing what's in store for the upcoming season. Each day we'll look at one of the 39 new series set to premiere this season and go over our initial impressions after viewing the pilot.

There's no particular order here, just whatever's next on the stack of tapes.
