Using floatation devices and a tether rope, three officers went into the water and managed to pull the men to safety. Local band Moot have been shortlisted for the annual LIET-LAVLUT European minority language song contest which will be held in Ostersund in Sweden this October. The contest was set up around four years ago to promote cultural diversity, bringing together new and challenging music in a variety of styles. Aalin Clague, lead singer with Moot, said: 'We're delighted to have been selected for the final from over sixty entries. The other ten finalists are incredible musicians, many of whom are professional. We're really looking forward to performing alongside them and representing the Isle of Man'. The judges from LIET-LAVLUT were particularly impressed by the quality of entries from small language communities such as Manx and Votian, a language spoken at the Estonian-Russian border. Moot's success in being shortlisted has already caught the attention of the world's media, who are excited about music in Manx Gaelic - even Italian TV has been in touch! The song chosen for the final is called 'Gyn Fockleyn' which means 'without words' - it's one of those songs which talks about not knowing which way to turn.
The future of plans to introduce a national speed limit on the Isle of Man will be revealed on Tuesday. Residents were asked for their views on a 60mph (90kph) national limit, which would bring an end to the island's remaining unrestricted routes. Transport Minister Phil Braidwood will reveal the results of the consultation in a Tynwald statement on Tuesday. Reports that the plans had already been axed were described as "premature speculation" by a government spokesman. Every household on the island was sent a questionnaire by the Department of Transport (DoT) to stimulate debate on the issue. Government figures show that a high percentage of deaths in traffic accidents on the island over the past three years have happened on roads with no speed limits.

John McGuinness concluded practice week at the Isle of Man TT Races with the fastest time in two of his three classes, one of which was quicker than the existing circuit lap record. The Morecambe rider posted a sensational lap of 127.81mph on Wednesday evening aboard his HM Plant Honda Superbike, just inside his own record of 127.68mph. He believed he could have gone quicker had it not been for being held up over the mountain, which he felt had lost him somewhere in the region of 5 seconds. With the Island bathed in sun for all of the practice sessions, the winds that had affected times at the beginning of the week began to ease and on Friday evening, McGuinness lapped at 124.15mph on his usual Superstock mount to move to the top of the leaderboard in this class also. A lap of 121.90mph on his Supersport machine has placed him second overall in the class so the 34-year old is well placed as the racing gets underway on Saturday.
