Speed-freak Marcus revs up for charity

Midland businessman Marcus Bradshaw is a self-confessed 'speed freak'. But Health Reporter Emma Brady discovered why the real winner of his latest venture will be a Birmingham-based cancer charity...

For as long as he can remember Marcus Bradshaw has been a self-confessed 'speed freak'.

As a teenager he messed about on his father's boat before moving into racing in the 1980s and then running his own powerboat since the mid 1990s.

At sea. Volvo Ocean Race: Pirates of the Caribbean’s router ...

It was very frustrating to watch these two sail away from us and then to have the slow light air boats the ABNs and Brunel, sail right up to us. The ABNs have upwind Code 0s and they have worked on this leg because the sea has been so flat. Yesterday morning we played the coastal effects real well and got ahead the ABNs and Brunel as we finally passed Fastnet rock and sailed along the southern coast of Ireland. There are some incredible castles and old forts along the rugged coast line. I did manage to enjoy the spectacular scenery despite my frustration at how Brasil and Ericsson had left us and were some 10 miles ahead. Yesterday afternoon the breeze filled in and ABN1 was just plain faster than us on a flat run in 16 knots of wind. This is the first time we have seen anyone out run us.

Moot to represent Isle of Man at alternative Eurovision this October

Local band Moot have been shortlisted for the annual LIET-LAVLUT European minority language song contest which will be held in Ostersund in Sweden this October. The contest was set up around four years ago to promote cultural diversity, bringing together new and challenging music in a variety of styles. Aalin Clague, lead singer with Moot, said: 'We're delighted to have been selected for the final from over sixty entries. The other ten finalists are incredible musicians, many of whom are professional. We're really looking forward to performing alongside them and representing the Isle of Man'. The judges from LIET-LAVLUT were particularly impressed by the quality of entries from small language communities such as Manx and Votian, a language spoken at the Estonian-Russian border. Moot's success in being shortlisted has already caught the attention of the world's media, who are excited about music in Manx Gaelic - even Italian TV has been in touch! The song chosen for the final is called 'Gyn Fockleyn' which means 'without words' - it's one of those songs which talks about not knowing which way to turn.

Show us the money, Plus SMS told

Investors hoping pointed questions would be asked during the Plus SMS annual meeting on Friday were not disappointed.

Pointed questions, principally about when and how the company would start earning revenue, were asked. They just weren't necessarily answered.

To some, Plus SMS is a typical technology start-up, burning cash while important developments take place behind the scenes, many of which can't be talked about in detail.

To others, the company's lack of revenue, or even of a revenue forecast, makes a mockery of its market capitalisation - $170 million at the last count.

Plus SMS, which completed a backdoor listing on the New Zealand stock exchange last July, is licensing mobile number ranges from international carriers to develop global short codes for interactive mobile phone marketing.
