Bad knees and all, siblings take rivalry to triathlon level

S ome things never change, like sibling rivalry. Now gray and middle-aged, we still revert back to the parlance of our youth: "You cannot do it!" "Can, too!" Can not!" Can, too!"

If the baby of the family was marking his 50th birthday by signing up for a triathlon in Chicago, then by gum, his 52-year-old sister (that would be me) was crazy enough to register, too.

And once our equally deranged 55-year-old brother heard his little brother and sister were committed to the Olympic challenge, well, what makes you think a 6-foot-4, 250-pound bear of a man with on-the-brink knees couldn't compete in a 1-mile swim, 26-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run? So there! You wanna bet?

Suffice it to say, if only my little brother hadn't turned 50 and forced us to prove that age is just a mindset, we might have saved a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and I mean that literally.

Glasgow team tips the city as insurance base

Glasgow is being tipped as a good place to set up an insurance or reinsurance company in a bid to attract more financial services business to the city.
After two major international insurance companies opened offices in Glasgow, a team from Scottish Enterprise and Glasgow City Council has been actively selling Scotland's biggest city as "an insurance and reinsurance destination".
This would put Glasgow up as a rival centre to Lloyd's of London, New York, Bermuda and Dublin.
"Glasgow is already a very strong financial centre," said Jim Watson, head of growing business at Scottish Enterprise Glasgow. "Historically, it has always had insurance companies here and we want to build on that by attracting more insurance and reinsurance companies to come to the city."
Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, in conjunction with Glasgow City Council, have been on a whirlwind tour of London, wining and dining influential insurance industry executives last week.

Comets will now be firing on all cylinders predicts Drury

WORKINGTON Comets boss Graham Drury believes the best is still to come from his team over the second half of the season. For the second time since taking over as co-promoter and team manager, Drury has led his team into the semi-final of the Premier Trophy as northern group winners. Lying sixth in a tightly-grouped Premier League leader board - just two points off the summit - Workington are well-placed to qualify for the end-of-season play-offs which will decide the title this year. The only disappointment has been the early exit from the Knockout Cup when Newcastle Diamonds edged through 95-94 on aggregate. Drury said: “To win our section by five clear points was a tremendous start to the season. It raised the bar on expectations and I know a lot of people involved in the Premier League sat up and took notice of what we had done.
