HM Plant Honda rider John McGuinness won his eleventh TT of his career, after taking the chequered flag in the 2006 Senior TT and achieved a personal hat trick, in a record shattering race. It was also Hondas 130th TT victory. Second in this sun blessed race was Australian Cameron Donald, riding in the TT for only the second year, having been the best newcomer in 2005. Third was Kiwi Bruce Anstey. Fourth, fifth and sixth were Ian Lougher, Guy Martin and Carl Rennie. The final race in the 2006 TT Festival saw no changes in the top five positions in the Duke Road Race Rankings, as current leader Ian Lougher held on to his number one position, although his points advantage has been reduced to 45 points by Bruce Anstey, who is just 38 points ahead of John McGuinness. Cameron Donald has 514 points, 109 ahead of Ian Hutchinson who retired on the opening lap of the Senior race.
WIMBLEDON, England -- If Roger Federer is to capture his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title and assume sole ownership of the Open era record for the longest grass-court winning streak (which he shares with Bjorn Borg at 41 straight), he'll have to be in form right from the beginning of the 120th rendition of The Championships. Federer has drawn a first-round match with No. 66 Richard Gasquet of France, whom he narrowly beat in three tight sets last week in a Wimbledon warm-up in Halle, Germany. Gasquet traditionally gives the world No. 1 a difficult time, although Federer has won three of their four matches. If Federer gets through, he'll play either local favorite Tim Henman, a four-time Wimbledon semifinalist, or Sweden's Robin Soderling in the second round. .
Seven-time UIM Class 1 World Powerboat champion and leading light in the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Championship, Steve Curtis, has been awarded an MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours List for Services to Sport. Steves award comes on the back of his 100th powerboat grand prix victory this month in Garrucha, Spain. The win puts Steve and Spirit of Norway team mate Bjorn Gjelsten at the top of the 2006 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. On hearing of his award, Steve said: I am really honoured to be awarded an MBE. Outside of the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Championship, powerboat racing is fairly low profile in the UK and as such receives little recognition. I hope that this award will assist in recognising the efforts of those involved within the sport and their continued hard work that keeps the UK at the forefront of powerboating around the world.
Buckingham Palace dug deep into its reserves of hubris yesterday to come up with a topical World Cup analogy for the Queen's cost to the nation. In previous years, Alan Reid, the keeper of the privy purse, has compared the 80-year-old monarch to the price of a loaf of bread and two pints of milk. This time, issuing the Royal Public Finances annual report, he claimed that the purely notional annual cost of Her Majesty to her subjects was 62p a head, or a minute's worth of attendance at Saturday's England versus Portugal match. .
A 14TH-CENTURY gold coin found in a field in southern England by a man with a metal detector fetched £460,000 at auction yesterday - a world record price for any British coin. The Edward III "double leopard" - worth six shillings when struck in 1344 - was bought at Spink's in London for the Isle of Man coin fund Avarae Global Coins. .
A band of intrepid walkers who completed the near 100 miles Coastal Path, as part of the Isle of Man Walking Festival, have returned home full of praise for the festival itself despite encountering gale force winds and torrential rain on the mountain tops. Walk leader Mick Salmon from Douglas has walked the coastal path (Raad ny Foillan) around 30 times but has rarely come across such unpleasant conditions. He said: The high winds on the second day from Port Erin to Niarbyl were just about the worst I can remember, and this week showed just how much of a challenge it can be. However, at the same time, my group were all experienced walkers and I think the difficulties made them all even more determined to complete the distance which they did. His comments were backed up by one of the group Anne Parry, a massage therapist from Reading in Berkshire.
