King Arthur

WHAT A witty, whimsical, mesmerising and meltingly beautiful entertainment the American choreographer Mark Morris has made of Henry Purcell’s semi-opera. It’s a village fête, a seaside show and a surreal pageant of British eccentrics from all eras and many mythologies, rolled into one and done with winning grace.

And how audaciously Morris has refurbished this bizarre Baroque hybrid for our impatient century. Try staging King Arthur as it was done in 1691 — a sprawling historical play by Dryden, intermittently spiced with Purcell’s music — and you would end up with a four-hour show, involving parallel casts of actors and singers, costing millions (just what Covent Garden did in the 1990s).

La. Fights Uphill Battle to Save Coast

NEW ORLEANS - Last year's hurricanes showed that nearly every part of Louisiana's long, circuitous and sinking coast is vulnerable to catastrophic flooding similar to what happened here.

So, while engineers work at breakneck speeds to erect earthen levees and floodgates around New Orleans, officials say there is also an urgent need to pour money into a second line of defense: The natural world of barrier islands and marshlands that stand between towns and the Gulf of Mexico.

On Friday, state and federal officials prepared to embark on a tour of several multimillion dollar projects started before Katrina and Rita. The work involved building sand dunes, planting marsh grasses and dumping mud on shorelines.

The tour of islands where pirates once held court and plantations flourished in better days highlights the desperate, and seemingly futile, war Louisiana is fighting against Mother Nature while it tries to patch up the human mistakes of the past.

The USA on DVD

Each year, we celebrate Independence Day by firing up the grill, dusting off those old lawn chairs and "ooh"-ing and "aah"-ing at fireworks. But what if it rains?

In the event that Mother Nature decides not to cooperate with your plans this Fourth of July -- or if you just want to stir up some pre-pyrotechnics patriotism -- it's a good idea to stock your DVD arsenal with some all-American titles. With that in mind, here are a few recent releases that showcase the best qualities of the American spirit.

Police Arrest Man In String Of Burglaries

Vermont State Police believe the arrest of one man might lead them to others in relation to a large burglary spree that stretches to 11 towns.

"It's caused quite a stir -- not only in the law enforcement community, but in the communities we've served as well," Vermont State Police Detective Lt. Brian Miller said of the 42 burglaries that have taken place in Franklin and Grand Isle counties in the past six weeks.

On Tuesday night, police arrested Jason Bockus, of Highgate, in relation to the property thefts, and officials said more arrests could be on the way.

"We don't believe he acted alone, so we're actively investigating other people that he may have been involved with," Miller said. "Obviously, there's a tremendous amount of stolen property out there somewhere." .
