For the first time the Province will host the nine race Hamilton Shipping 2006 Sigma 33 Championship which will involve some of the top racing yachts in Britain. The Sigma 33 is a 33 foot yacht designed by David Thomas in the late Seventies. It is unique among cruiser/racers in that every boat is exactly the same with performance relying solely on crew skills. And this formula has been phenomenally successful as a racing and cruising yacht with fleets all over the UK and Ireland as well as abroad. The racing gets under way this Wednesday and the fleet of 21 Sigma 33 yachts will be based in the Five Anchor Quay Marina - at the foot of Bangor's Main Street. Royal Ulster Yacht Club, just a short walk from the Marina, will be the hub of all shore activities, including an attractive social scene, and is looking forward to welcoming sailors from the UK, Scotland, Ireland and Isle of Man Among the visiting contenders expected to make the running will be Paul Scutt's Carmen from Helensburgh, Scotland, who took the honours in last year's Irish Championship which was held at the same venue.
Joining the ranks of high-quality re-creation cars, made in the spirit of the originals but with modern materials and finish, is the C-Type from British manufacturer Enduro. Its true to the original shape of Jaguars early 50s Le Mans-winner, but a brief test proves it to be a surprisingly user-friendly car that can be driven on a fun day out or even in mild competition. Built in Coventry, the home of Jaguar, the Enduro is an all-metal two-seater designed and manufactured by a company with a wealth of knowledge of modern motor racing and CAD-CAM construction, yet retaining (with a little tweaking, see below) the glorious lines of the earlier car. It has a fabricated steel tubular chassis in the spirit of the original (but much stiffer) and the aluminium body is made in the same fashion as the Morgan Aero 8 or the latest aluminium cars from Jaguar and Audi.
Severe thunderstorms that brought accidents, fires and flooding to the region Friday afternoon will likely continue today. The weather is the result of a slow-moving cold front colliding with a warm flow of air from the south, said Rick Curry with the National Weather Service in Wakefield. "It's just ripe for kicking off thunderstorms," he said. Curry said the storms in our area are part of a line of thunderstorms stretching from North Carolina to Salisbury, Md. While the rain tapered off Friday night, similar storms could reappear this afternoon and into Sunday. Curry said there is a 30 percent to 50 percent chance of rain in the afternoon throughout the weekend. Friday's weather brought problems throughout the region. Heavy rain flooded roads, and lightning sparked fires in James City and York counties.
