Yn Chruinnaght Committee Press Release Pt. 3

A pair of groups from Wales will be travelling to the Isle of Man for Yn Chruinnaght 2006. DAWNSWYR SIR CONWY was established especially to compete in the prestigious national Gŵyl Cerdd Dant festival in November 2004. They are an energetic team of Welsh folk dancers/musicians led by Dr Prydwen Elfed-Owens. The majority are teachers in schools within the county of Conwy. The team has spent a very busy year performing at various festivals including functions to welcome visitors to the county from the various countries of Europe and beyond. DAWNSWYR SIR CONWY have resurrected two traditional Welsh celebrations in the county namely the ancient Old Welsh New Year or Hen Galan on the one hand - with the arrival of the Mari Lwyd and company of six merrymen - and on the other hand, the Mayday celebration with a performance of the Welsh morris dance, Cadi Ha, to include a bedecked Summer branch and the colourful characters of Cadi and Bili.

Previewing the 2006-07 Season, Part 16: ABC's 'Big Day'

Please note: As a courtesy, please do not reproduce these comments to newsgroups, forums or other online places. Links only please.

With the official start of the 2006-07 season less than three months away, the drumbeats have begun by the networks to tout their new comedies and dramas. What should you keep your eye out for? What should you avoid at all costs? While it's still a little early for full reviews (some recasting and reshooting will be done on a good chunk of them), we thought we'd spend the next month or so previewing what's in store for the upcoming season. Each day we'll look at one of the 39 new series set to premiere this season and go over our initial impressions after viewing the pilot.

There's no particular order here, just whatever's next on the stack of tapes.

Gamebookers Restate Offer to Even Up Wimbledon Prize Money

Gamebookers, the global online betting and casino company has restated its offer of 30,000 pounds Sterling to the eventual winner of the Wimbledon's women's singles competition in response to Wimbledon organisers defiance in awarding equal prize money to men and women.

The 30,000 pounds Sterling has been set aside by Gamebookers and will make up the shortfall to take women's prize money to 655,000 pounds Sterling, equal to that of the men's competition.

The issue has raised its head now that Wimbledon is upon us and a number of women's tennis stars are voicing their opinions. Venus Williams feels, "Wimbledon's stance devalues the principle of meritocracy(i)."

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell added her views by stating she would like to join the chorus of voices across tennis urging the Wimbledon organizers to consign the inequality to the past and bring the prize structure in line with the rest of world tennis.

Brothers take Combe double

MOTOR SPORT: THOUSANDS of motor racing fans descended on Castle Combe as the circuit hosted its first ever world championship event.

The crowds saw the finest sidecar competitors in the world when the British round of the FIM Superside World Sidecar championships came to north Wiltshire at the weekend.

Sidecar racing is one of the world's most extreme team sports, with the passengers travelling up to speeds of 175mph on a platform no bigger than a tea-tray. Castle Combe sales and marketing manager Rodney Gooch was delighted the circuit was chosen to host such a prestigious event.

He said: "It was absolutely terrific. The racing was sensational and the reaction of the crowd and volume of support was superb. "On the Saturday, with the World Cup being on, we had a slightly lower number of spectators than we were expecting, but on the Sunday a lot more people turned up, and they were certainly an excited and enthusiastic crowd."

TT 2006; SENIOR RACE RESULT

Spectators in the sun-kissed Isle of Man saw the fastest race in TT history today when John McGuinness completed his third win of the week, in the 2e2 Group Senior Race, and set up a new outright lap record at over 129 miles an hour! It was his 11th TT victory and moved him up to level third on the list of all-time greats.

Conditions were perfect for the final race of the 2006 TT, with the thermometer heading well into the 70s, and McGuinness took full advantage to lead from start to finish. His absolute record lap, on his Honda, was timed at 129.451.

Australian Cameron Donald took his first podium position in second place and afterwards confessed himself to be stunned at his achievement. He finished 21 seconds behind McGuinness, with Bruce Anstey third. Bruce will have cause to remember his final lap as he tried to catch Donald.

Deadly weapons taken off the street

A SAMURAI sword, machetes, flick knives and a Bowie knife have been handed in to police in Swindon since the beginning of a knife amnesty.

More than 50 blades have given to officers at the Gablecross station and the town centre point since May 24.

Police say that they are glad people are heeding the message.

And they say that every knife that is handed in could help cut crime and violence, or even save a life.
