To coincide with National Archaeology Day, Manx National Heritage is hosting a special event day on 16th July, from 12.00noon to 5.00pm, when visitors will have the opportunity to explore the secret history of Peel Castle. Manx National Heritage staff will take you on a journey through time, where visitors can find out about the archaeological artefacts that have been discovered on St. Patricks Isle and meet the people who left them behind! The aim of this national annual event is to encourage young people and their families to visit sites of archaeological interest, learn about archaeology and take part in activities on site. Manx National Heritage has been involved with National Archaeology Day for the past few years but this will be the first time the event has taken place at Peel Castle.
A Suffolk man was arrested Sunday evening after leading Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Deputies on a pursuit. The chase began in the 15,000 block of Carrolton Boulevard at Ron's BP. Deputies responded to the gas station after receiving a call that a man had an improvised explosive device strapped to his body. A passerby told police she approached Frank L. Turner in the parking lot of the gas station just after 8 p.m., because she needed a lighter. The passerby says she saw the bomb on Turner's body. When deputies arrived, the 42-year-old got in his car and fled towards Suffolk. Turner eventually crashed at the intersection of Muddy Coast Circle and Carrolton Boulevard. Police say Turner threw the bomb device into a wooded area. The Virginia State Police bomb squad recovered the bomb.
GRIH Comment: The following is a copy of a letter sent to Sen. John McCain by one of his good friends and a fellow prisoner of war in North Vietnam during those awful days. His clarity of thought concerning the Akaka bill speaks for itself. Dear John: This is one last appeal; PLEASE vote NO on the Akaka Bill, S147. I know you find it difficult to go against the elected representatives of Hawaii, but let me explain. Governor Lingle (with whom I agree on most issues), Hawaii's Congressional delegation and State Legislature are all in favor of the bill because it will guarantee MILLIONS IN CONTINUED FEDERAL FUNDING for over 150 programs specifically for Native Hawaiians (race based) most of which they are eligible for anyway based upon NEED, like anyone else. The legislators view the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) like they view the Hawaii Govt.
The Isle of Man secured the largest single conference to come to the Isle of Man in the past 10 years with the Royal British Legion conference for 2010 when conference delegates voted 347 to 141 in favour of the Isle of Man over Birmingham. A delegation of 11 Royal British Legion members, headed by Ellis Killey the chairman of Isle of Man County, supported by the Department of Tourism and Leisure, were successful in persuading delegates at the Annual National conference in Blackpool over the bank holiday weekend, to vote for the a return to the Isle of Man after an absence of 22 years the last conference was held in Douglas in 1988. The Isle of Man continues its tradition of a supportive membership with the Royal British Legion and in recent years has produced a national Chairman, several national Standard Bearers, a Chairman for the Poppy Appeal and has held the Poppy Appeal Trophy for nearly 30 years.
Prefuse 73 and Edan kick off their summer tonight, rhymin' and rollin' their way across America. Folks concerned that this is going to be another boring series of lonely-DJ-spinning-his-records appearances have nothing to worry about. Prefuse recently announced via MySpace that his live band is in tow, featuring "d.j. nobody, reminder, leb laze, and the other troops." He later clarified that "the other troops" means "the best fucking drummer on earth." Sounds like "the best fucking drummer on earth" took umbrage to being lumped in with the troops. After Prefuse wraps up the tour with Edan in June, he recharges his batteries and slaps in a new stylus for an August show in New York City's Central Park. TAS riders Bruce Anstey and Mark Miller handed Suzuki a double showroom victory in the Scottish Life International TT Superstock race on Monday, proving that the GSXR Suzuki machines are very much top of their production classes. Anstey, the winner of this event for the past two years started with a blistering 125mph lap from a standing start to fend off the challenge of Ian Hutchinson, and after 115 miles of racing with one lap remaining, less than two seconds covered the pair. On the final circuit Anstey turned the screw on his GSXR1000 TAS Suzuki posting a lap of 126.20mph to take the win from Hutchinson and Jason Griffiths. Miller from Long Beach in California was making his TT debut and a stunning final lap of 117.91mph gave him the distinction of being the first 750cc machine to cross the line, completing a prolific production race double for the Suzuki marque.
A former soldier was today celebrating setting the world record for the deepest dive by a blind person after plunging to a depth of more than 100 metres in Egypt's Red Sea. With the support of St Dunstan's, a charity for blind ex-Servicemen and women, 38-year-old Mark Threadgold beat his previous personal best dive by more than 30 metres to record 103 metres below sea level at the Blue Hole near Dahab. The feat puts him in the elite 1% of divers worldwide who have passed the 100 metre mark. The former Royal Corps of Signals sergeant, who lost his sight in 1999 after suffering head injuries in an accident, was on top of the world after securing his record, which marks the latest stage in a remarkable personal story. Mark, originally from Sykehouse, South Yorkshire, but who now lives in Brighton, rebuilt his life with the help of St Dunstan's.
London - Japanese motorcyclist Jun Maeda has died as a result of injuries sustained during a crash in practice for the Isle of Man TT races. Maeda, 38, from Kyoto, collided with Irish rider Seamus Greene during practice on May 29. He died in a Manchester hospital after being airlifted from the Isle of Man, off England's north-western coast. A spokesman for Maeda's team, ASR Evomoto Honda, said: "Since he first raced here in 1997, the TT meant everything to Jun. "His love for the TT and the island itself made him work hard all year, every year, to get back here. Even after his accident he was talking about coming back to the TT next year. "Jun used to say the Isle of Man felt like home." Greene remains in a critical condition in Liverpool's Walton Hospital after sustaining head injuries.
