John McGuinness conquered the Isle of Man TT Mountain Course for a ninth time as he powered clear of his rivals, shattering the lap and race records, to take victory in the opener to this year's festival, the six-lap Superbike event. The Lancastrian had the winning formula, the raw power and speed of the specially developed HM Plant Honda Fireblade, coupled with his own determined, smooth style for this 37.73-mile dash around the Island's public roads and over the heights of Snaefell. He had warmed up for the race with record speeds during practice, but there was better to come as he charged away from the start line, quickly taking command of the race and pulling clear of Welshman Ian Lougher, riding a similar Fireblade but in Stobart colours, with Ian Hutchinson a solid third for Kawasaki.
LEEDS, UK: A mother is bracing herself for a fresh court battle with her former husband a year after he was jailed for torching her home as their autistic son slept upstairs. Andrew Baker, 31, has been freed from prison early less than a year after being sentenced for the arson attack on the home of his then wife, Lyndsey Foy, their autistic son Luke, four, and Lyndsey's son from a previous relationship Joshua, 12. Firefighters had to rescue Luke from his bedroom as flames and smoke took hold of the house in Belle Isle, Leeds, trapping the toddler inside. Baker is now demanding access to the son, whose life he put in such grave danger. Recalling the chilling moment she opened the solicitor's letter making the demands, Lyndsey told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "I thought it was some kind of sick joke.
A band of intrepid walkers who completed the near 100 miles Coastal Path, as part of the Isle of Man Walking Festival, have returned home full of praise for the festival itself despite encountering gale force winds and torrential rain on the mountain tops. Walk leader Mick Salmon from Douglas has walked the coastal path (Raad ny Foillan) around 30 times but has rarely come across such unpleasant conditions. He said: The high winds on the second day from Port Erin to Niarbyl were just about the worst I can remember, and this week showed just how much of a challenge it can be. However, at the same time, my group were all experienced walkers and I think the difficulties made them all even more determined to complete the distance which they did. His comments were backed up by one of the group Anne Parry, a massage therapist from Reading in Berkshire.
An Edgewood man is facing federal charges after he allegedly threatened northeast Iowa casinos by letter and telephone. According to a complaint filed against him Friday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, Greg Johnson admitted his threats to a postal inspector during a raid at his parents' home, where he was also living. According to an affidavit with the case, Johnson told U.S. Postal Inspector Kevin Marshall that he wrote and mailed threatening letters and telephoned bomb threats to the Isle of Capri Casino in Marquette and the Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque. According to the affidavit, Johnson mailed the letters and called in the bomb threats because he saw them as justice for what the casinos did to him. Johnson had been barred from both casinos for disorderly conduct.

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.- The Tennessee Smokies woes against in-state rival Chattanooga continued on Thursday afternoon at Smokies Park, losing a 5-1 decision that drops their record to 3-9 against the Lookouts in 2006. The Lookouts took advantage of five doubles, including three from former Smokie Dewayne Wise, to inch one game closer to the first-half championship in the North Division. The Lookouts entered the day with a two game lead over the West Tenn with the Diamond Jaxx visiting Huntsville on Thursday night. Chattanooga capitalized on Wise's first double in the second inning when catcher Ryan Hanigan slapped a single down the third base line that struck the base and redirected into left field. The redirection allowed the speedy Wise to score from second base and give the Lookouts the 1-0 advantage.
BREAKING NEWS: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has granted a permit for the Isle of Capri to build a new Rhythm City casino, hotel and parking complex on the Davenport riverfront. Further details of the decision will be available later Thursday. The $43.1 million complex is to be built on a 2.9-acre site in the floodplain between Brady and Perry streets. The Corps had to give permission for the project by Isle of Capri Casinos Inc., which owns the Rhythm City Casino, that would require dredging 12,000 cubic yards of river bottom offshore of the site to accommodate moving the riverboat and a service barge. Environmentalists have voiced fears the dredging would ruin three acres of fish habitat at the foot of Lock and Dam 15. Light pollution from the casino and hotel operation also would cause harm, they say.
