Raconteurs Announce NYC Show, Single Details

Jack White's boy band the Raconteurs have announced a whopping one-date American tour, which will begin and end on April 7 at New York City's Irving Plaza. Whoa, slow down! You don't want to overexert yourself, man.

The show will be the White/Brendan Benson/Greenhornes supergroup's first American appearance. It follows a brief string of UK dates, including a gig in Scotland which White allegedly played dressed in full Scottish regalia, kilt and all.

Tailing the Raconteurs' big stateside debut by, oh, four months, is a stop at Lollapalooza 2006.

This is the big time:

04-07 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
08-04 Chicago, IL - Grant Park (Lollapalooza)

Both shows will be in support of the Raconteurs' debut album Broken Boy Soldiers, slated to hit shelves May 16 via Third Man Records/V2 in both CD and deluxe gatefold vinyl formats.

Deadly weapons taken off the street

A SAMURAI sword, machetes, flick knives and a Bowie knife have been handed in to police in Swindon since the beginning of a knife amnesty.

More than 50 blades have given to officers at the Gablecross station and the town centre point since May 24.

Police say that they are glad people are heeding the message.

And they say that every knife that is handed in could help cut crime and violence, or even save a life.

Send your thoughts and comments to: john.elworthy@archant.co.uk 1 MARK TAYLOR A surprise choice, maybe, for the number position but in the case of Mark Taylor, well deserved. He's been selected on the basis that the exercise of real power can sometimes involve the surrendering of it for the greater good. .

PRIVACY WORLD - THE WORLD'S SHREWDEST PRIVACY NEWSLETTER

"I talk to a new client interested in expatriating every week. Many people can't pay the federal tax rate and live in the style they want." So said Francis Mirabello, the head of the personal law department at the Philadelphia office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, speaking at a Bermuda conference on offshore money early this fall.

Expatriating? Give up U.S. citizenship? Who in his right mind would give up his U.S. citizenship? Lots of people. You could practically fill a Boeing 747 with well-heeled U.S. citizens who have taken on foreign citizenship rather than submit to what Learned Hand called "enforced exactions" at a level that amounts to virtual confiscation. The exodus may speed up under an Administration that campaigned for office on a tax-the-rich platform.

In 1981 Ronald Reagan lowered taxes.

Newcomer Cameron Donald takes Skerries by Storm

Australian Cameron Donald, came to the Skerries Road Races, saw and conquered, taking two victories and a second place on his debut ride around the most famous of the Southern Irish Road Races. The Uel Duncan Racing Team rider opened his account with a start to finish victory in the M & M Plastering Irish Open Championship Race over local favourite Martin Finnegan, with Raymond Porter taking third. In the Malting's House 600cc race, the likeable Aussie was pipped to the post by Porter by a mere 4/10th's of a second, with Finnegan third. Cameron wrapped up day with a convincing 4-second advantage over Martin Finnegan in the Des DArcy Grand Final, where Raymond Porter took third. Darran Lindsay took the 250cc race honours as Robert Dunlop took the 125cc race victory. In the Duke Road Race Rankings, current leader Ian Lougher is still ahead, although his points advantage has been severely cut back to just 16 points as Cameron Donald moves into second place demoting Kiwi Bruce Anstey to third.

Acadia NP Bill - Big Money Grab and Eminent Domain - Acadia #2

The willing seller language that was stripped out in the 80's needs to be put back before HR 2692 is passed out of the House. S 1154 already passed the Senate with the same existing language as the House. The House must send a message to the Senate with HR 2692 that eminent domain must not be added back in during a conference committee to reconcile the two bills.

There are some devious things happening in Acadia National Park that should be a lesson to anyone having to deal with the National Park Service and its support groups.

The Acadia National Park Improvement Act of 2005 (S 1154 - the House is using the Senate number.) has passed the Senate and will undergo a hearing in the House Resources Committee Wednesday at 10:00 am.

S 1154 does a number of things but from where we stand it gives Acadia a huge portion of likely land acquisition funding, disproportionate to the size and needs of the park.

Historic ship figurehead on show

An historic ship's figurehead, which was washed ashore in 1895, has gone on display on the Isle of Man.

The figure was on view inside the main gate at the Curraghs Wildlife Park in Ballaugh, before being donated to Manx National Heritage last year.

The figurehead has now been restored and is on show at the Nautical Museum in Castletown.

It was commonly believed by sailors that a female form in a state of undress would pacify a raging sea.

Curator Matthew Richardson said: "Unfortunately, continuous exposure to the elements threatened the long term survival of the figurehead, so MNH undertook to care for it as part of the national collections.

"I am delighted to say that the figurehead is now back on public display, after some conservation treatment, undercover in the more appropriate surroundings of the Nautical Museum, alongside other artefacts illustrating the Isle of Man's links to the sea."

The Nautical Museum is part of the award-winning Story of Mann.
