Isle of Man News, Articles and Information

Wednesday letters

There is a very unsafe practice being performed on the railroad main line - only one man on a train. I have been in the railroad industry for 37 years and I have seen a lot, but this is the most ludicrous and total disregard for the safety of the people and fellow railroaders in Maine. One of the railroads in the state has been and is going to do more running of trains with one man.

As an engineer myself, I can't imagine being on a train one-half or one mile long and having a mechanical problem, which happens a lot. If the train has a problem and has a crossing blocked it could be a long period of time for one man to find out the problem and clear the crossing, if he could. One's house could be on fire or a family member could be in need of an ambulance or police.

It could be an hour or so, like the Brownville Junction incident recently.

Speed limit survey results heard

The future of plans to introduce a national speed limit on the Isle of Man will be revealed on Tuesday.

Residents were asked for their views on a 60mph (90kph) national limit, which would bring an end to the island's remaining unrestricted routes.

Transport Minister Phil Braidwood will reveal the results of the consultation in a Tynwald statement on Tuesday.

Reports that the plans had already been axed were described as "premature speculation" by a government spokesman.

Every household on the island was sent a questionnaire by the Department of Transport (DoT) to stimulate debate on the issue.

Government figures show that a high percentage of deaths in traffic accidents on the island over the past three years have happened on roads with no speed limits.

Fenland’s finest power players

The power and influence of the media in the life and times of Fenland cannot be underestimated. The media's role in scrutiny and reporting of local government, the health service, education and examining the proprieties of individuals going about their daily lives, is well recognised and, indeed, expected.Would Goosetree junction be getting its £800,000 roundabout had not a hard hitting campaign by the Cambs Times brought it about? Would vast sums be considered for improving the Ramsey Forty Foot had not the media spotlighted the horrific dangers of driving there? In Fenland you need to ask yourself what would be the affect of withdrawing a media presence from our community, in order for you then to reflect on the question of what influence it really does bring into your daily lives?9 AUDREY BRADFORD The organisation of which she is chief executive, East Cambs and Fenland Primary Care Trust, may be going out of existence shortly, but I suspect Mrs Bradford's influence will continue.

Me and my travels

A pair of tennis shoes. I don't play tennis everywhere I go, but when I'm some where nice like Capri and see a tennis court, I am tempted.

My idea of paradise is ...
Getting away from outside influences, away from traffic and aircraft noise. Some of the most unbelievable places for that sort of experience are parts of Africa where you can see the stars at night and it's very quiet.

My top travel tip is ...
Plan ahead. I don't want to waste time looking for a nice hotel or a restaurant when I'm visiting somewhere. I like doing that research and getting a feel for a place before I go.

My favourite hotel is ...
La Residencia , near Deia in Mallorca. It's a really lovely hotel; the layout is informal but very pretty and it sits on a hillside looking down towards a beach.
