La. Fights Uphill Battle to Save Coast

NEW ORLEANS - Last year's hurricanes showed that nearly every part of Louisiana's long, circuitous and sinking coast is vulnerable to catastrophic flooding similar to what happened here.

So, while engineers work at breakneck speeds to erect earthen levees and floodgates around New Orleans, officials say there is also an urgent need to pour money into a second line of defense: The natural world of barrier islands and marshlands that stand between towns and the Gulf of Mexico.

On Friday, state and federal officials prepared to embark on a tour of several multimillion dollar projects started before Katrina and Rita. The work involved building sand dunes, planting marsh grasses and dumping mud on shorelines.

The tour of islands where pirates once held court and plantations flourished in better days highlights the desperate, and seemingly futile, war Louisiana is fighting against Mother Nature while it tries to patch up the human mistakes of the past.

Feature: Noughts and crosses

As World Cup Fever grips the nation, it seems a St George's Cross plastered onto any product you care to mention, from toilet seats to England hoodies for dogs (yes dogs!), allows the seller to add a nought to the price and several to the volume sold - but who owns the England 'brand'? .

It's a block where on a sun-soaked Thursday afternoon in early summer, neighbors set up water ice stands and kids splash in an inflatable pool. It's a block where little girls sit on a step and giggle over a notebook, and where a little boy runs to the corner store for a soda.

It's a block where boarded-up houses are overshadowed by pretty ones, where neighbors celebrate children's graduations by putting their pictures in the window, and where one front-door sign proclaims: "JESUS IS LORD."

It's a block where neighbors congregate on front steps, and kids play in the street all day.

It's also a block where, not too far away, there are shootings, and where less than a month ago, when a stray bullet critically wounded a 4-year-old girl who was playing outside, no one said a word.

RUBBER DUCKY; F1 GOOD TO GO

"We will put on a good show. I think after what happened last year, we all want to go back on the track tomorrow and enjoy the weekend."

He was adamant a grand prix race in America is a must.

"The race is very important for me," Alonso said. "I think Formula One is the biggest show you can see in the world, so why not in America? Why not in the States? You have everything here, all the sports -- the great champions. I think Formula One has to be in America, yes."

SPEED RACER: Californian Scott Speed, who competes for Scuderia Toro Rosso, is the only American F1 driver.

A rookie, Speed is coming off a 10th-place finish, his best of the year, at the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend.

Speed, 23, is pumped up to be at Indianapolis and racing in the States.

How to taste whisky properly

In a chapel on a Sunday afternoon, two dozen men and women came for a whisky tasting. As the whisky was poured into tulip-shaped glasses, the sun was setting through the tall windows, letting in beams of light. The beams swimming with dust motes fell across the folding tables so that the gold, honey, and straw tinted whiskies were shot through with violet and green filaments. It was one of the hottest, longest days of the year. Soft cheese died slow death on paper plates.

The men who looked like whisky drinkers sat in the back row. They were shy and serious at first, but after a few pre-tasting nips their ears turned pink and they began to titter and cluck at one another. One had a sea captains beard. He brought his own half-empty bottle of whisky to a tasting and put it on the table.

Caring for children with complex health needs

Children with learning disabilities and complex health needs are now surviving to adulthood due to clinical advancement (Burr, 2000). This has resulted in families taking on the additional responsibilities of care for their disabled child. Burr (2000) established that the 'trend in care has shifted from institutions to the child's home, placing considerable responsibility, work and expense on the family'. The government paper Saving Lives (DoH, 1999) recognises this shift and advocates that community nurses play a crucial part within the scope of public health in maintaining the well being of children and their families. Therefore, effective planning for continuing care needs is crucial (Muir & Dryden, 2000) and will ensure improving life chances for children as recommended within the government's papers Valuing People (DoH, 2001), Every Child Matters (DoH, 2003) and Getting the right start (DoH, 2003) and keeping within public health targets.

Market report: Rexam does the can-can for football-driven demand

There was more good news for Rexam as a further two brokers published bullish notes on the beverage can maker.

Their comments came hot on the heels of Citigroup upgrading the shares from hold to buy on Tuesday. This time, Merrill Lynch lifted its rating on the shares from neutral to buy, saying: "In our view, earnings per share forecasts now reflect the bulk of the potential downside from aluminium prices." It expects Rexam Europe to report 8pc volume growth in the first half of 2006, driven by demand during the World Cup.

Teather & Greenwood was too bullish. It moved from reduce to buy. Rexam, which was trading at 563½p in April, recovered 13¼ to 506¾p.

Steel group Corus also attracted attention as it climbed as high as 455p when hopes of a bid for the company flared up once again.
