NB: we know that there are far more worthy heroes than those listed here - doctors, nurses, aid workers, Franck Sauzee, etc. Similarly, murderers, rapists and dictators are indisputably far greater villains. This column does not deal with them. It is designed to honour those who have caused surprise by their actions. Hero: Bruno the bear He was hit by a car and it came off worse. He shunned honey-laden bear traps. He eluded skilled hunters. He out-toughed Norwegian elk hounds. He ate his prey on the steps of a police station. .

They say it's about being in the right place at the right time to make dreams come true, and I'd say that trusty adage applies directly to this week's surf fishing. I know I've been barking about the big bass activity the past few weeks, but this only comes around once a year, so it's worth it to give it another solid week of coverage, especially now. Why now? Look at the tides this week, they're perfect for the surf fisherman. High tides will lay into the shoreline from 5 a.m. through 9 a.m. all weekend, with heavy water flooding the shores in the promo morning hours, as well as the evening hours. Add to that attractive adult bunker schools that still hover along the coast, throw in some schools of flashy, tasty hickory shad, and you've got a recipe to put a trophy pair of Ol' Pajamas onto the beach.
The Colmcille organisation celebrated St Columbas Day in a weekend festival in Gleann Cholum Cille 9-11 June. Peter Karran MHK, Fiona McArdle and local band, Skeeal, travelled to Donegal to contribute to an inter-Gaelic gathering organised to promote cultural exchange. Festival-goers were treated to psalm singing from a group from the Isle of Lewis whilst a 19ft Zulu skiff Cuach sailed into Teileann harbour. The group of psalm singers featured well-known solo singer, Mary Smith, who performed at the Isle of Mans own inter-Gaelic festival, the Cooish, a few years ago. The Colmcille festival attracted a great deal of media attention within Ireland, with political representatives from each country brought together with musicians and Gaelic speakers from across the Gaelic world. The first night of the festival featured Liam OMaonlai and the Hothouse Flowers, who performed after a dynamic young band Face the West from the Isle of Lewis.
