It's a block where on a sun-soaked Thursday afternoon in early summer, neighbors set up water ice stands and kids splash in an inflatable pool. It's a block where little girls sit on a step and giggle over a notebook, and where a little boy runs to the corner store for a soda. It's a block where boarded-up houses are overshadowed by pretty ones, where neighbors celebrate children's graduations by putting their pictures in the window, and where one front-door sign proclaims: "JESUS IS LORD." It's a block where neighbors congregate on front steps, and kids play in the street all day. It's also a block where, not too far away, there are shootings, and where less than a month ago, when a stray bullet critically wounded a 4-year-old girl who was playing outside, no one said a word.
One weekend Isle Of Wight, the next Hyde Park. Foo Fighters cement themselves as one of the world's biggest rock bands by retreading a path of rich musical heritage - and some of that 'heritage' is here to help out... Phew, what a scorcher! If the sun beating down on Central London isn’t enough to heat up Hyde Park, then the sound of some of the hottest rock bands around definitely will. 85, 000 people descend onto the famous London location, an outdoor venue steeped in rock history that's seen historic shows by The Rolling Stones, Queen, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and, of course, last year's Live 8. This time round it's everyone's chance to see Foo Fighters playing one of the biggest gigs of their life, but first comes an afternoon appetiser to wet the lips of any self respecting rock lover.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Gov. Mike Easley got his pick of lots in a gated community on the Bogue Sound, paying a bargain price for the waterfront lot compared to sales of other property in the development, The Charlotte Observer reported. A spokeswoman for Easley denied he received any special favors. But his broker, the project's developer and the man who helped finance the development are all friends and contributors whom the governor has appointed to high-profile state boards, the Observer reported in Sunday's editions. Easley paid $549,880 for the one-third-acre lot in Cannonsgate, a development of million-dollar homes in Ocean, about 16 miles west of Morehead City. The price was 3 percent above the lot's assessed tax value. But 49 adjacent waterfront lots in the same development sold for an average of 20 percent to 36 percent above tax value, the Observer reported.
