Isle of Man News, Articles and Information
One weekend Isle Of Wight, the next Hyde Park. Foo Fighters cement themselves as one of the world's biggest rock bands by retreading a path of rich musical heritage - and some of that 'heritage' is here to help out... Phew, what a scorcher! If the sun beating down on Central London isn’t enough to heat up Hyde Park, then the sound of some of the hottest rock bands around definitely will. 85, 000 people descend onto the famous London location, an outdoor venue steeped in rock history that's seen historic shows by The Rolling Stones, Queen, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and, of course, last year's Live 8. This time round it's everyone's chance to see Foo Fighters playing one of the biggest gigs of their life, but first comes an afternoon appetiser to wet the lips of any self respecting rock lover.
When an island council announced that it was giving away free compost bins, it could not have predicted the response. Hundreds of vehicles caused the first traffic jam recorded on the Isle of Lewis and the police had to be called because of fears over public safety. The giveaway was halted after three hours with roads in and out of Stornoway at a standstill and with "bin rage" threatening to erupt. As islanders apparently competed to participate in a green revolution, one man turned up in a lorry, asking for 200 bins for his village. Police said they were "staggered" by the response, particularly as Lewis is windswept and mostly treeless, and the crofters outside the main town are not known for tending gardens. Lewis also has a poor record on recycling, which is why the bins were offered as part of a Scottish Executive initiative.
Put the tubs side by side against the washer, and swing the wringer so that it can be locked in near the edge of each tub, with the opposite side sticking out a little so the clothes won't fall back into the tub. Make the adjustments before putting it the water! Tubs filled with water are very difficult to move. Once everything is in place, fill the washer with water and detergent. Turn it on for a minute to dissolve the detergent, but be sure to put the lid on first! An empty tub will slosh water everywhere. While the machine is running, add your clothes a few at a time, allowing them to be dipped under by the dasher. This part is fun, actually. When the tub is fairly full (don't overfill; allow the clothes room to swish), put the lid on and begin filling the rinse tubs about two thirds of the way full.
The Irish Independent reports that the runaway property market is finally beginning to cool and some homes are even seeing a drop in prices for the first time in more than a decade. Estate agents said yesterday they had seen the first evidence of a "soft landing" after years of astounding growth. But the Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute insisted there was no prospect of a property crash. Its chief executive Alan Cooke said: "The soft landing seems to be happening. It won't happen across the entire market in one fell swoop and it won't hit geographically at the same time." He said it would affect a range of mortgage holders across different sectors first. "But it's only a question of time until it levels out." Fintan McNamara, chief executive of the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers said a number of members had reported a significant drop in interest in property.
John McGuinness put in a scorching ride in Saturday's TT Superbike race to win his ninth TT, also setting new lap and race records along the way. The Morecambe rider broke his own outright lap record on the first and second laps leaving it at a new high of 127.933mph and he eventually ran out a clear winner by over 39 seconds. It was a textbook performance by the HM Plant Honda rider and just has he has done in previous years he left his rivals trailing in his wake on the opening lap. At the first check point at Glen Helen John was the joint leader along with Ian Hutchinson but upon seeing his first signal he pushed harder and by the time the first lap had been completed his lead was up to an ominous 12 seconds. A standing start lap of 127.835mph broke not only the lap record but also the opposition and the trend continued over the second lap.
