World Cup 2006 Green Goal Scores

Among the many aspects of the Green Goal program, FIFA world cup tickets double as fare tickets for the public transit system--which goes hand-in-hand with the "Berlin Steigt Um" campaign here in Berlin (roughly translated "Berlin changes mode of transport"). And for the locals, postcards like the one above promote using a bicycle to reach one of several secure, free bike parking places to be set up near major event centers. The theme in this graphic--bikes will get you through the traffic--will ring true to many a Berliner. (The card reads "All roads closed/Free for bicycles").

Motorcycling: Blazing saddles

TT Superbike victor John McGuinness took full advantage of cruel luck which struck three of his greatest rivals - Guy Martin, Bruce Anstey and Ballymoney's Adrian Archibald - to score a convincing opening win on the Isle of Man yesterday.

McGuinness blazed away from his rivals - all of whom were forced out with mechanical problems, and then insisted: "I rode the perfect race."

In scorching conditions, the 33-year-old produced a vintage performance as he romped to the chequered flag 39.14 seconds clear of Ian Lougher on the Stobart Honda, while Yorkshire rider Ian Hutchinson, on the McAdoo Kawaski, came home third with Martin Finnegan from Lusk on the Klassi Honda in fourth..

Morecambe-based McGuinness broke the official lap record on two of his six circuits of the 37.73-mile mountain course.

Sports Round-up

Valentino Rossi, the five times winner of the World MotoGP crown, has committed himself to riding for the Yamaha team through to the end of the 2007 season, during which the series will change to an 800cc formula.

The Italian will play a big part in the development of the team's new bike but first he is determined to put his title bid back on track with a victory in Sunday's sixth round at Mugello.

- Dave Molyneux, the record 11 times winner of the Isle of Man Sidecar TT races, sustained chest and shoulder injuries in a heavy crash at around 130 mph during practice yesterday on the Rhencullen section of the 37.73-mile Mountain Course.

His passenger, Craig Hallam, was also taken to hospital in Douglas for treatment to friction burns.

Touring Cars

Eoin Murray will make his British Touring Car debut at Croft in July.

ANOTHER CRASH AT TT

Practice for the Isle of Man TT races on Thursday afternoon was marred by an incident involving top sidecar pairing Dave Molyneux and Craig Hallam.

Driver Molyneux, an 11-time TT winner and current lap-record holder, and passenger Hallam came to grief at the Rencullen section of the course.

Marshals reported the HM Plant Honda machine caught fire, with both racers helicoptered to the island's Noble's Hospital.

Early reports said Molyneux suffered arm injuries but Hallam was hospitalised only as a precaution.

Caribou burglar sentenced to 5 years in prison

BANGOR - A Connecticut man who stole guns, jewelry and checks from two Aroostook County homes, then escaped police custody and fled the state was sentenced Tuesday in Penobscot County Superior Court to five years in state prison. Robert H. Smith, 27, of Caribou and Southington, Conn., was ordered to serve that sentence concurrently with the 12-year federal sentence imposed last week in U.S. District Court for being a felon in possession of firearms and forging and cashing a stolen check in Presque Isle. He was prevented from possessing guns because he was convicted in 1996 in Connecticut of seven felonies. Smith's sentencing on the state charges was held in Bangor because Superior Court Justice Allen Hunter is sitting this month in Penobscot County Superior Court. The judge's office is in the Aroostook County Courthouse in Caribou.

La. fights uphill battle to save coast

Last year's hurricanes showed that nearly every part of Louisiana's long, circuitous and sinking coast is vulnerable to catastrophic flooding similar to what happened here.

Engineers are already working on the earthen levees and floodgates around New Orleans, but officials say there is also an urgent need to pour money into a second line of defense: The natural world of barrier islands and marshlands that stand between towns and the Gulf of Mexico.

On Friday, state and federal officials embarked on a tour of several multimillion dollar projects started before Katrina and Rita. The work involved building sand dunes, planting marsh grasses and dumping mud on shorelines.

The tour of islands where pirates once held court and plantations flourished highlights the desperate, and seemingly futile, war Louisiana is fighting against Mother Nature while it tries to patch up the human mistakes of the past.

Family: Suspect in crash needs help

Larry Jacobs' family said they were searching for him in North and South Carolina when they heard he had been arrested in connection with a collision with a motorcycle in Myrtle Beach.

The 67-year-old businessman had vanished late Saturday from his home in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., without taking his medication for bipolar disorder and manic depression, said his daughter, Kimberly McGillewie.

Jacobs remained jailed without bond Wednesday in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

He was charged Sunday with assault and battery with intent to kill.

Witnesses told police he plowed his car into a motorcycle driven by 27-year-old Makino Robinson that morning, then drove for several miles with Robinson's wrecked bike under his car.

The family now wonders what more could have been done to help Jacobs before his arrest.
