Savings Tax Directive Is One Year Old,

It's just a year since the EU Savings Tax Directive swung into action, and IOM-based Derbyshire Offshore says it doesn't seem to have been the disaster for the world of offshore that many predicted.

Introducing a new, higher rate on Derbyshire's Interest Accumulator account, Fiona Passey, Director of Offshore Banking says, 'Whilst the overall impact of the new Directive continues to be far less than expected, this new account gives customers a valuable tax planning option as the interest and tax are deferred for a minimum of two years and then only paid at the customer's request."

The European Savings Tax Directive was introduced a year ago, with the aim of clarifying the position of the taxation of offshore deposit accounts for EU residents. For offshore financial centres such as the Isle of Man, a withholding tax option was introduced for those customers who wanted to preserve the confidentiality of their banking affairs.

Beating the Gulf with nature: A costly yet vital task for ...

NEW ORLEANS -- Last year's hurricanes showed that nearly every part of Louisiana's long, circuitous and sinking coast is vulnerable to catastrophic flooding similar to what happened to New Orleans.

So, while engineers work at breakneck speeds to erect earthen levees and flood gates around New Orleans, officials say there is an urgent need to pour money into a second line of defense: The natural world of barrier islands and marsh lands that stand between towns and the Gulf of Mexico.

On Friday, state and federal officials prepared to embark on a tour of several multimillion dollar projects started before Katrina and Rita. The work involved building sand dunes, planting marsh grasses and dumping mud on shorelines.

The tour of islands where pirates once held court and plantations flourished in better days highlighted the desperate, and seemingly futile, war Louisiana is fighting against Mother Nature while it tries to patch up the human mistakes of the past.

BLIND DIVER SMASHES WORLD RECORD

A former soldier was today celebrating setting the world record for the deepest dive by a blind person after plunging to a depth of more than 100 metres in Egypt's Red Sea.

With the support of St Dunstan's, a charity for blind ex-Servicemen and women, 38-year-old Mark Threadgold beat his previous personal best dive by more than 30 metres to record 103 metres below sea level at the Blue Hole near Dahab. The feat puts him in the elite 1% of divers worldwide who have passed the 100 metre mark.

The former Royal Corps of Signals sergeant, who lost his sight in 1999 after suffering head injuries in an accident, was on top of the world after securing his record, which marks the latest stage in a remarkable personal story.

Mark, originally from Sykehouse, South Yorkshire, but who now lives in Brighton, rebuilt his life with the help of St Dunstan's.

SEE YOU IN THE FUNNIES 06/30/06

Comic books have had their ups and downs over the decades, but like many of the caped, muscle-bound heroes of mainstream comic world, the industry has long co-existed with a dark id, a distorted alter ego from a parallel universe.

In short, there are comics and then there are comix.

While the mainstream comics have become movies and TV series, the comix, otherwise known as underground comics, have existed on counterculture cult followings and a small but dedicated core of artists who are drawn to the form.

In the Detroit area, Martin Hirchak is one of the current leaders in the underground comics, or comix, field.

"It's a small niche thing, but it's growing," Hirchak said at River's Edge Gallery at the opening reception for "Pop Art Funnies," an exhibition of original artwork from Hirchak's comic book of the same name drawn by him and the many Detroit area artists who have contributed to "Pop Art Funnies since Hirchak started it in 2003.

Natural iron supplement; food intolerance/allergies; exploring homeopathy

Q. I have been prescribed iron tablets by my doctor for heavy periods, but I would prefer to find a natural alternative. I still look pale and lack energy, so I am not even sure they are helping. What do you suggest?

Katie Kelly, Isle of Man

Reynolds column: Playing with Hercules.

In the latest of his exclusive columns for Crash.net, former Rizla Suzuki racer John Reynolds talks about his passion for biking and playing with aeroplanes.....

Hi guys,

Well it was a tough weekend for the Rizla team at Snetterton, it didn't really start too well with Shakey going off at high speed. It was tough, but racing is time and again.

I feel so sorry for James as he always seems to be carrying injuries and it would be just great to see him fully fit and riding the bike properly they way we know he can. It is awkward, but Jon Kirkham had a good chance to shine this weekend and he did a sterling job. Ok, he had a bit of a tip off in the first race, but he is riding really well and looking like he could move up some positions and have a good result - but of course you've got to finish to get them.
