Self-deprecation a new quality in English

Perhaps it was inevitable, given the prevailing resentment among many Tartan Army foot soldiers to the alleged superiority complex of the English commentators at the World Cup, that a few neanderthals should advance to the next illogical step and perpetrate acts of violence on anybody rash enough to be caught supporting Sven's brave boys in Linwood and Munich.
But, honestly, as somebody who has spent the weekend surveying the wreckage of several England teams, across the sporting spectrum, it is surely a sad indictment of how Scotland has descended into such a self-perpetuating spiral of anti-Sassenach sentiment. Why have so few people noticed the air of apprehension and self-deprecating humour, which has increased among the St George brigade?
On Saturday, for instance, Stuart Barnes, the erstwhile England stand-off, could not have been more scathing in his assessment of England's latest rugby debacle in Australia if he had been wearing a kilt, a See-You-Jimmy wig and carrying the Calcutta Cup.

Family: Suspect in crash needs help

Larry Jacobs' family said they were searching for him in North and South Carolina when they heard he had been arrested in connection with a collision with a motorcycle in Myrtle Beach.

The 67-year-old businessman had vanished late Saturday from his home in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., without taking his medication for bipolar disorder and manic depression, said his daughter, Kimberly McGillewie.

Jacobs remained jailed without bond Wednesday in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

He was charged Sunday with assault and battery with intent to kill.

Witnesses told police he plowed his car into a motorcycle driven by 27-year-old Makino Robinson that morning, then drove for several miles with Robinson's wrecked bike under his car.

The family now wonders what more could have been done to help Jacobs before his arrest.

Mother of autistic toddler braces herself for new battle with ex-husband

LEEDS, UK: A mother is bracing herself for a fresh court battle with her former husband a year after he was jailed for torching her home as their autistic son slept upstairs.

Andrew Baker, 31, has been freed from prison early less than a year after being sentenced for the arson attack on the home of his then wife, Lyndsey Foy, their autistic son Luke, four, and Lyndsey's son from a previous relationship Joshua, 12.

Firefighters had to rescue Luke from his bedroom as flames and smoke took hold of the house in Belle Isle, Leeds, trapping the toddler inside.

Baker is now demanding access to the son, whose life he put in such grave danger.

Recalling the chilling moment she opened the solicitor's letter making the demands, Lyndsey told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "I thought it was some kind of sick joke.

Competition: In a few words No 3934

I had an e-mail from dear David Silverman just double-checking that he wasn't supposed to send in a limerick, to which I replied in the negative, adding: "Happily no one has yet sent in a limerick!" I wrote too soon. One poor man did just that. I apologise profusely if the instructions weren't 100 per cent clear. I was going to print one of his limericks to cheer him up, but as none of them scanned I shan't. Well done to Richard Robinson, whose name I don't recognise. 10 to the singletons, 15 to the rest. The overall winner (La Curran) also gets the Tesco vouchers. Quilted toilet paper The Da Vinci Code is like a Sudoku puzzle, wrapped in luxury quilted toilet paper and served on a bed of crisp dollar bills. Cold Comfort Farm is like A Social History of England interpreted as an episode of The Archers.

ENVIRONMENT OTTER

A national wildlife charity has today hailed the return of the otter after a major new survey revealed almost all populations of the animal were stable or increasing.

The Wildlife Trusts charity has today published an annual review of the Water for Wildlife partnership project which highlights a number of success stories.

Researchers have revealed that with almost 500,000 from the Environment Agency, 300,000 from the water industry and 10,000 volunteer days, the trust has helped to maintain or restore more than 600 hectares of wetlands and 50 kilometres of rivers.

The figures also show 1,344 surveys were carried out on threatened water voles and more than 19,000 people participated in walks and talks led by the charity which acts as the umbrella body for wildlife trusts in each region of the UK.
